2nds @ Sarnia

Saturday May 26, 2007

The Hamilton 2nd XV got their regular season off to a slightly unconventional start on Saturday against Sarnia Saints. Due to a lack of numbers on Sarnia's part, the match was turned in to a 10 aside contest. Hamilton started well and seemed to have some considerable pace over their opponents. At approximately 11 minutes of the opening half, the Hornets had forced the Saints back in to their own end resulting in a Sarnia scrum 5 metres from their line. The clearance kick from the scrum went straight to Scott Nameth and the big Hornets winger ran it in from the 22 metre line breaking a couple of tackles.

Half way through the first half, Hornets fly half, Roger Pizarro, ran the ball in from a Hornets scrum close to the Saints line. The Saints fought back, however, and scored a try of their own about 8 minutes later to narrow the score at half time to Sarnia 5 - Hamilton 10.

Following the restart, Pizarro, picked up where he had left off with a 30 metre run in to score his second try of the day to extend the score to 5 - 15.

At about 10 minutes into the 2nd half the Dagg factor was unleashed on the Sarnia forwards with veteran Hornets prop, Tim Dagg, subbing in. Tim made an immediate impact on the Sarnia scrum which had been competing well with Hamilton up to that point as the Hornets then began to wheel their opposite pack.

Five minutes later, Pizarro completed his hat trick by crossing from the back of another scrum close to the Sarnia line. With the score now 5 - 20, it appeared that Hamilton were on their way to a comfortable win. To their credit, Sarnia hung in right until the death scoring two tries in the last 15 minutes of the half. Then on the last play of the game Sarnia broke the Hornets defense and their winger tried to ground the ball under the posts to set up the easy conversion rather than settle for the guaranteed 5 points and the draw. Veteran Hornet, Oliver Nagy, was determined not to allow the score and made a try and game saving tackle to hold the player up. The referee then blew his whistle and Hamilton 2nds had their first win of the season under their belts.

Final Score: Sarnia 15 - Hamilton 20
Hornets Man of the Match ~ Scott Nameth (winger)
