1sts @ Sarnia

Saturday May 26, 2007

The Hamilton Hornets made their return to the NRU A division on Saturday against perennial power-house Sarnia Saints. It was a bruising and high paced encounter that reminded every one that the A division is a significant step up from B. Hamilton got off to a slow start and by half time Sarnia were up by 17 points to nil courtesy of two converted tries and an excellent 40 metre drop goal.

The second half was a much more even affair with the Hornets starting strongly from the restart and marching the ball down to within 10 metres of the Sarnia try line before the Saints gave up a penalty. Hornets captain, Peter Van Zyl, took the points on offer. Hamilton were unlucky not to score again on a couple of occasions in the second half. Sarnia, however, put the score out of reach after 10 minutes into the half with an unconverted try while Hamilton were reduced to 14 men for a yellow card.

Final Score: Sarnia 22 - Hamilton 3
Hornets Man of the Match - Shaun Hill (winger)

There were many positives to take from the game. The line out and scrum functioned well and there was good, hard running and tackling from Hornets forwards and backs. Coach Hopkins video recorded the match and is confident of identifying and exploiting some of Sarnia's tactics. The senior men will be working extra hard this week in training in preparation for the return visit of the Saints this coming Saturday June 2nd in what promises to be another intense competition.
