Saturday June 2, 2007 Hamilton Hornets 1st XV got their season back on track on Saturday by turning over Sarnia Saints in their rematch in Hamilton. It was a hard fought contest and Sarnia kept the game scoreless until the twelfth minute when fly half, Jamie Whan, gathered a deflected kick from Hornets scrum half, Chris Gilks, to run in under the posts. Hornets captain, Peter Van Zyl, made the conversion to get off to a 7 - 0 lead. The next score had to wait another 12 minutes when Sarnia gave away a penalty after the Hornets had been camped in their end for close to 10 minutes. Van Zyl made the penalty to extend the lead to 10 points. The third score came, ironically, about another 12 minutes into the match when Whan dummied a couple of defenders to create space for Van Zyl who ran it in from 30 metres out. The flanker then converted his own try to take the score to 17 - 0. A moment of indiscipline from veteran Hornet scrummie, Gilks, saw the Hornets reduced to 14 men just before the break. After the restart the Hornets were made to work hard in defense by Sarnia and with Gilks in the bin, for what may have been the longest sin-binning in history, somehow managed to squeak out another penalty which Van Zyl was only to happy to kick over. Sarnia hung in well though and the only other score came right on full time as Sarnia gave away another penalty which Van Zyl scored. Final Score: Hamilton 23 - Sarnia 0 The 1sts and 2nds play next weekend away at Cambridge/Kitchener. The 3rds are in Brantford on Saturday. The 2nds and 3rds will be looking forward to the weekend as they had to endure two defaults from the opposition last time out.
