1sts v Grimsby
2nds v Muddy York

Saturday May 12, 2007

Hamilton Hornets first XV played their first 80 minute match of the year against Grimsby Gentlemen RFC. Preseason training has obviously paid off. The final score was 50 to 0 in favour of Hamilton. Veteran Hornet, Dave Morrison, had a great day at his old position of lock forward, securing possession at ruck after ruck, tackling hard and carrying the ball well. Dave was named man of the match but the outcome of the match was due to a great team effort.

The second XV had an impressive day out against Muddy York RFC winning by 121 points to nil. A lot of new combinations were tried out for the first time on the pitch and the guys gave the coaching staff a lot of things to consider in selections for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XV squads. Scott Nameth was named man of the match for the 2nds with a 5-try performance on the wing in his debut match for the Hornets and first rugby match ever. Scott was later punished at the club house accordingly for such behaviour.

A special mention has to be made regarding the way the players from Muddy York conducted themselves. Grimsby may be named the Gentlemen but Muddy York demonstrated to all on Saturday why rugby is referred to as a gentleman's sport. Despite some adversity on the field, the Torontonians never became negative and were constantly heard encouraging one another to keep on going. Hamilton would do well to remember this lesson in positive thinking heading into the 2007 regular season.

Afterwards a great afternoon was enjoyed back at the clubhouse. Unfortunately Grimsby could not stick around but Hamilton and Muddy York celebrated yet another good day for the sport of rugby.
