Match Report:
Hamilton v Grimsby

Hamilton Hornets Senior Men recorded their second consecutive shutout and their highest points spread of the season against a gutsy Grimsby side. Sounds like a convincing win, well it was, but it could have been better. Handling by forwards and backs was abysmal in the first half. It improved in the second but was still suspect. Discipline also slipped a bit in the last 20 minutes. The Hornets seemed to be going backwards more from the referee's whistle than from the efforts of the opposition in the final quarter. This being said, I think it says a lot about how far this team has come this year when it can admit to playing below par and still manage to score 7 trys to zero.

Grimsby kicked off to Hamilton at 7:03 pm. The Hornets began to gain territory immediately and should have scored within the first minute or two of the game. The Hornets' forwards were in devastating form at the scrum and line out and to say that Grimsby had difficulty winning their own ball at the set piece would be nothing short of an understatement. The opponents managed to win their first scrum after 32 minutes of the first half.

The first try came on 8 minutes of the first half from inside centre, Matt Barrett, who received a nice reverse pass from fly-half, Steve Ferreira and ran in from just over 10 metres out.

On 17 minutes Steve Ferreira sold an awesome dummy between the Grimsby centres and broke for the line from 40 metres only to be stopped within 5 metres of the try line. The stand-off managed to present the ball well for his supporting backs. Outside centre, Peter Richardson picked the ball quickly and drove over for the second try. Returning scrum-half, Chris Gilks, converted the try to extend the Hornets' lead to 12 - 0.

A sin binning to 8-man, Tyler Struyk, did not slow down the Hornets pack as they managed to win a scrum against the head even though they were a man down. Flanker, Jason Mancini, did well to pick the ball out of the scrum from the open side and run up the blind side for a try from just inside the Grimsby 22 m after 26 minutes.

At the 33 minute mark Lock, Geordie McDougall, linked up well with the backs and would have surely scored had it not been for a high tackle. The referee played advantage and Scottish Pete was again in close support to recover the ball at the break-down and go over the line for his second try of the night.

Halftime Score: Hornets 22 - Grimsby 0

The Hornets came out just as hard in the second half and pinned Grimsby down in their own 22 with a nicely weighted penalty kick for touch from Steve Ferreira. The resulting line out was secured and Grimsby had to defend desperately. The pack set up a nice rolling maul and marched their opponents over the try line. Dan Moscardini scored his first Hornets try (a classic prop's try) by falling on the ball in goal as the maul crossed the line. Dan was a little bit happy about this. Chris Gilks converted the try to extend the lead to 29 - 0.

The next try came 5 minutes later. Steve Ferreira sold yet another outstanding dummy to the Grimsby backs and ran in for a try from 30 metres out. Chris Gilks was true with the boot yet again to add the 2 points.

The final try of the match came on 33 minutes of the second half. The replacement stand-off hit a huge hole in the Grimsby line before off-loading to Matt Barrett who found himself with nothing but 40 metres of grass between him and the Grimsby try line. Chris Gilks again added the extras as Hamilton went on to record a 43 - 0 shutout win. Matt Barrett was named man of the match.

The senior men play Stoney Creek this Saturday at noon on field #1 in the league quarterfinals and would appreciate any support from club members and friends.
