Match Report:
Hamilton v Stoney Creek

Saturday August 13, 2005

The Hornets continued their shutout streak on Saturday with a 38 - 0 win over Stoney Creek Camels in the NRU B quarterfinals. Stoney Creek gave as good as they took for the first 20 minutes but Hamilton's superior fitness took over after that.

The Hornets forwards continued to exert their dominance at the set piece and stole a Creek lineout on the 22-minute mark on their own 40-metre line. The ball made it quickly out to the backs and Peter Richardson ran in to score under the posts for his third try of the season. Peter Van Zyl converted.

Eight minutes later lock, Geordie McDougall, pinched another Creek lineout. The ball fell to the Hornets' side of the lineout and hooker, John Sanderson, cleaned up the loose ball to set up Peter Van Zyl who avoided a couple of tackles and ran it in from 20 metres out. Pete then converted his own try to take the half-time tally to Hamilton 14 - Stoney Creek 0.

Things only got worse for the visitors after the break as Hamilton's fitness began to take over. The final score would probably have been an even greater margin had the Hornets not given up a remarkable 18 penalties to 3 in favour of Stoney Creek during the match.

The first try, however, did not come until 12 minutes into the second half when inside centre, Matt Barrett, crashing hard onto a ball from his stand-off, broke 3 tackles from the Stoney Creek 22, managing to extend one arm over the try line as he was finally brought down inches from the line.

Three minutes later the stand-off collected his own chip kick and ran in from 40 metres out. Peter Van Zyl once again secured the extra points.

On 23 minutes of the second half, the Hornets' pack managed to steal another scrum against the head. 8-man, Tyler Struyk picked the ball out and off-loaded to flanker, Jason Mancini (man of the match as far as this observer was concerned), who popped a pass off to Peter Van Zyl who went over for the try. Once again, Pete converted his own try.

The last score came just before the final whistle. Stoney Creek knocked the ball on just inside their own 22 m and Jason Leek capitalized on this mistake to run over for his first try of the season.

Final Score: Hamilton 38 - Stoney Creek 0
