Saturday July 8, 2006 The Hamilton Hornets' 2nd team showed much improvement in a narrow loss to league leading Sarnia Saints on Saturday. The Hamilton forwards competed well with their Sarnia opposites and set up some good ball for the backs to exploit. The Hornets scored first when scrum half, Chris Gilks, took a quick tap penalty from 10 meters out and broke a tackle before managing to ground the ball on the try line with one free hand. Sarnia then hit back with a couple of tries and went into the break a score ahead. Sarnia would score two more tries after the break but Hamilton pushed them hard right to the end. The second Hornets' try came from a five-metre, attacking scrum when winger, Edward John, raced down the blind side and scored in the corner. The Hornets were unlucky on a couple of plays following this and kept the pressure on Sarnia to the end. Inside centre, Steve Ferreira was judged to have touched the corner flag as he touched down in goal. In another controversial call, the Hornets should probably have been awarded a penalty try when winger, Jordain Charette, was tackled 2 metres from the line with what appeared to be a, "no attempt to wrap", illegal shoulder charge. Junior hooker, Jeff Dowhan, scored a late try with a 20 metre run, selling a nice dummy, to go over in the corner. Dowhan was joined on the day by fellow juniors Steve Ferreira and Roger Pizzaro who showed that they all now have what it takes for men's rugby. Scorers for the game were: Tries: Chris Gilks, Edward John and Jeff Dowhan. Conversions: Steve Ferreira (1) Man of the Match: Edward John Final Score: Hamilton 17 - Sarnia 24.
